iPadOS 27.2 for Students: What Changed for Handwritten Notes
· 5 min read
iPadOS 27.2, released by Apple on 26 October 2026, matters to students for three reasons: Write with Siri now works when you select handwritten text in Notes, Siri AI can recall your earlier conversations, and the update closes more than 160 security holes. If you take notes by hand on an iPad, the first one is the change to try. If you study in Hebrew or live in the EU, read the availability section before you plan around it.
Below is what changed, which iPads get it, and what it does and does not do for handwritten study notes.
What is new in iPadOS 27.2 for students?
The short answer: a smarter Siri, Siri writing help on handwriting in Notes, and easier split screen. Here is the student relevant part of Apple's release notes on About iPadOS 27 Updates, in plain terms.
- Write with Siri on handwriting in Notes. Apple says Write with Siri "is available in more places, including when you hover over a text selection or an empty line with a trackpad, and when you select handwritten text in Notes."
- Siri remembers. Siri AI "can recall your past conversations," so you can ask about something it told you before.
- Siri uses more of your context. It can draw from photos attached in Messages, Calendar event attendees, voicemails, and Safari history and Reading List.
- Excluded Apps. One setting lets you choose which apps Siri, Search and suggestions can access.
- Copy part of an answer. Granular text selection lets you copy just the part of a Siri response you need.
- Easier split screen. Side by side multitasking is easier to set up, with the option to pick a second app when you tile apps left or right.
- More languages for Siri AI. French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.
MacRumors has a good walkthrough of the same release in iOS 27.2 Features by Juli Clover, and the release itself in Apple Releases iOS 27.2.
Does iPadOS 27.2 work with handwritten notes?
Yes, inside Apple Notes. You can select handwriting in a note and use Write with Siri on it. Apple's iPadOS 27 page also pitches Apple Intelligence for study work and says you can "turn handwritten lecture notes into a detailed study guide" (apple.com/os/ipados).
What that means in practice:
- It is a Notes app feature. Notebook apps from other developers do not get it automatically.
- It works on the selection you make. It is a writing tool, not a way to ask questions across a whole semester of notebooks.
- It needs a supported iPad, a supported language and a supported region (next section).
If your handwritten notes already live in Apple Notes, this is a real upgrade: select a messy paragraph and let Siri help you turn it into clean text or a draft summary. If your notes live in a dedicated notebook app, the update does not change how that app handles your handwriting.
Which iPads and regions get Siri AI?
Apple lists the Siri AI features in 27.2 for iPad mini (A17 Pro) and iPad models with M1 and later. Two more limits matter:
- Region. Apple states in the release notes: "Siri AI is not available in the EU or mainland China."
- Language. Apple's Apple Intelligence language list (in the footnote of its Notes audio transcription guide) covers Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Vietnamese. Siri AI itself starts in English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.
- Usage limits. Apple notes that "usage limits may apply" for some Apple Intelligence features, and that features using server side models have daily limits.
So a student in Israel with an M1 iPad set to English is in the supported group, subject to Apple's note that some features are not available in every region. The same student cannot use Siri AI in Hebrew today, because Hebrew is not on Apple's list.
Should students install iPadOS 27.2 now?
For most students, yes, and security is the main reason. MacRumors reports that iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 fix more than 160 security vulnerabilities. Apple keeps its own security notes at support.apple.com/100100.
A calm way to update during the semester:
- Back up your iPad (iCloud or a computer) so your notebooks are safe.
- Make sure your note app syncs or exports, and that the latest notebook pages are saved.
- Update on a quiet evening, not the night before an exam.
- After the update, open your note app and check a recent notebook before class.
Apple's own footnote says updates "may affect performance and/or battery life," so expect a day of indexing after a big update.
What iPadOS 27.2 does not solve for studying
Apple's update makes Siri a better writing helper. It does not make your notes answer questions on their own. Three gaps remain for students who write by hand:
- Answers grounded in your notes. A general assistant answers from general knowledge and from the context Apple lets it see. When you study for an exam, you usually want the answer as your lecturer taught it, with a pointer to the page it came from.
- Help on a formula, not just on text. Write with Siri is a writing tool. A step in an integral or a proof needs a different kind of help: explain this step, or solve it again more simply.
- Hebrew. For students in Israel, a study tool has to work in Hebrew, right to left, today.
This is the gap Aura is built for. Aura is a study notebook for iPhone and iPad where you write by hand, and Ask Aura answers from your own notebooks with a tappable source back to the page. If your notes do not cover something, Aura says so instead of guessing. You can circle any line or formula and choose Explain, Simplify, Summarize, Solve or Quiz. It works in Hebrew and English with full right to left support. Aura is heading to TestFlight and then the App Store, and you can join the waitlist.
A simple iPad study setup after the update
Whatever app you use, this setup makes the most of iPadOS 27.2:
- Use the easier split screen. Put your notebook on one side and the lecture slides or a PDF on the other. Tiling is now quicker to set up from the window controls.
- Keep handwriting legible enough to select. Selection based tools, Apple's or any other, work better on clear lines than on dense scribbles.
- Check Excluded Apps. Decide which apps Siri, Search and suggestions may read. Private study notes are a reasonable thing to leave out.
- Turn each lecture into questions. At the end of a session, write three questions the lecture answered, and use them to quiz yourself before the next class.
